Noam Chomsky
昼間はスーパーにお買い物へ。今日は良い肉が手に入った。
生成文法の祖・チョムスキーが講演をするというので、夕方に聴きに行く。
チョムスキーは言語学者というよりも思想化に近い活動をしているらしく、
今日の講演のテーマもアメリカの外交についての話だった。
開演15分前に会場のLaw Schoolに到着すると、なんと100mほどの列！
そんなに聴衆を集めるほどの人なのか、と圧倒されてしまった。
開始時間になっても人が会場に全然入りきらない。建物の窓の外から
無理やり覗き込んでいる人もわんさか。ものすごい光景だった。
かくいう僕も、会場の中にまったく入れずにいた。人があふれかえってて、
入り口付近も人だかりの山。しかもアメリカ人は体格が大きいので、
まったく部屋の中が見えない…。
せめて一目でもチョムスキーを見たい！と思って（ミーハー？）入り口で
粘っていたら、20分ほど経った頃に人の隙間からちらりと御本人が見えた。
話は半分以下しか聞こえなかったけれども、会場はものすごい熱気だった。
結局1時間半近く人だかりの中で立って頑張っていたら、最後の方は
会場の中にちょっとだけ入れた。話は半分以下しか聞こえなかったけれども、
アメリカが国際法上「違法だけれども適正である（illegal but legitimate）」という
外交主義を使ってどんなことをやってきたか、という批判がテーマだった。
質疑応答の時、優秀そうな黒人の学生がチョムスキーを「Dr. Chomsky」と
呼んでいたのが印象的だった。「Dr.」という称号が「Professor」よりも強い
敬称である、と、この時はじめて実感を伴って納得した。
大統領選に関する質問をした彼は、質問自体に聴衆から喝采を浴びていた。
チョムスキーは、明日はミシガン大の別の場所で言語と認知に関する
講演をするらしい。正直、半端じゃない、とてつもない人だな、と思った。
内容はあまり聞こえなくても、あの会場の雰囲気は一生忘れない気がした。
