Hail to the Victors
信じがたい試合を観てしまった。
Ann Arborで開かれたミシガン大vsミシガン州立大のフットボールゲーム。
因縁のライバルで毎年盛り上がるこの試合、Big Tenカンファレンス優勝を
狙うミシガン大としては「負けられないゲーム」だった。
第4クォーターの試合終了8分前、ミシガン大は10点差で引き離されていた。
そこに州立大が追加のタッチダウンを決め、10-27の大差を付けられる形に。
伝統あるライバル校との大事な勝負も、そしてBig Ten優勝も絶望的になり、
もはや11万人の誰もが声を出せなくなってスタンドは完全に静まり返っていた。
10分の試合時間を残して、スタジアムを後にする観客も続出していた。
残り時間6分頃になって、ミシガン大が3点の些細なフィールドゴールを決める。
得点13-27。そんな小さな点を取ったところで一体何なのだ、と誰もが呆れた瞬間、
ミシガン大のヘッドコーチ・Lloyd Carrは驚くべき奇策に出た。
フィールドゴールからのキックオフで、通常ボールを前方に大きく蹴り出すところ、
ミシガン大のキッカーは何とほぼ真横に向けて鋭いボールを蹴ったのだ。
意表を突かれた州立大の前衛は、ボールのキャッチを試みるが失敗してファンブル。
こぼれたボールをミシガン大がすかさずカバーして、一瞬にして攻撃権を奪った。
そこから速攻でロングパスを繰り返し一気にタッチダウン。得点20-27。
勢いに乗ったミシガン大は首尾よく次のディフェンスを決め、再び攻撃権を握る。
そして再び猛烈な攻撃に転じ、なんと再度タッチダウンを決めてしまった。
この間、最初のフィールドゴールからわずか5分44秒。10-27の絶望的な状況から
17点の大差を瞬時にして奪い返してしまったのだ。
スタンドは絶叫の嵐になっていた。試合はそのまま27-27の延長戦にもつれ込む。
Over TimeというサッカーのPK戦のような方式で勝負が行われ、得点差がつくまで
両チームがゴールの至近から交互に攻撃を繰り返す、という形式が使われた。
しかしミシガン大・州立大ともに2回攻守を繰り返しても決着がつかず、もしも
3回目で決まらなければ公式に引き分け、という状況に追い込まれる。
3回目の攻撃、先手のミシガンはタッチダウンを決めた後のボーナスプレイで
何と通常のキック（1点）ではなくリスクの高いタッチダウンプレイ（2点）を選択し、
これを見事に決めた。この成功が後手の州立大に対して猛烈なプレッシャーとなり、
試合開始から5時間後の夜8時半、ミシガン大が守備を決めてついに逆転勝利！！
試合終了後も、スタジアムの10万人が誰も帰らずに絶叫と拍手を続けていた。
今シーズンは手に汗握る大逆転劇が多いけれども、それにしても今日のような
壮烈な試合は観ようと思って巡り合えるものではないし、たとえ忘れたくても
絶対に忘れられないように思う。
10万人が踏み鳴らす足音と悲鳴のような咆哮とで、スタジアムに重低音が響いた瞬間に
偶然居合わせた幸せを噛み締めながら、ぼうっとした頭で帰路に就いた。
家へと戻る人々で一杯の街の道路は、スタジアムと同じように大歓声に包まれていた。
夢の中を歩いているような、そんな光景だった。

NFLの誘いを断り、ミシガン大にもう1年だけ戻ったBraylon Edwards選手のコメント：
「僕はこのために残ったんだ。正直言って、試合後にこんな気分になるのは初めてだ。」
ミシガン大のヘッドコーチを10年努める、最高年俸の名将Lloyd Carrのコメント：
「今まで見たことのあるゲームの中で、最高の試合だった。今日の試合でどちらかの
チームが敗者にならなければならなかったのは、なんて不幸なことなんだろうと思う。」
